Pindos Mountains, Greece
Having visited Greece several times for summer vacation, I always associated the country with the coastline. Stunning beaches, blue skies, crystal clear turquoise water, but relatively uninteresting, sunburned inland. Not giving it much thought, the reach greenery of the mountainous central Greece came as a surprise once crossing the continental part in autumn last year (2021). With that, we decided to explore the mountainous Central Greece at the earliest possibility which turned out this September.
The landscape of the vast part of western continental Greece is dominated by Pindos mountains. The highest peak, Smolikas, reaches 2637m and is the second tallest mountain in the country, only after Olympos. Many other mountain groups of Pindos tower around 2500m. The region is fantastically cut by deep ravines and river valleys.
Though scarcely populated, it is still scattered with picturesque tiny villages and a system of well kept national roads and local dirt roads provides convenient access. We selected a conveniently located region of the city of Karpenisi and Neo Mikro Chorio.
